In Cottage Economy, Tory radical William Cobbett defended the home-brewing of beer as an act of independence. Opposed to large-scale manufacturing, Cobbett wrote his "guide to self-sufficiency" to combat the rise of state-economy that taxed farmers beyond their means through use of paper money.
