2001 CE
Portugal decriminalizes drug use as part of a proposed new drug strategy.

The new law effective in 2001 maintains the status of illegality for using or possessing any drug for personal use without authorization. However, the offence is not treated as criminal with possible prison time, it is now treated as an administrative offence. The procedure and mechanism for dealing with such offences is now dealt with an administrative procedure. When a person is caught in possession of 10 daily doses of drugs or less, and the police have no suspicions or evidence that supply offences are involved, the drug will simply be seized.
