The Native American Church is established in the United States. James Mooney, a Smithsonian Institute archeologist, traveled through Oklahoma in 1891 and participated in various Peyote ceremonies. His travels convinced him of the need to protect Indians' legal right to worship with Peyote. Mooney is responsible for the establishment of the Native American Church, for which he wrote a charter.
