Chinese emperor explores impact of alcohol on public health

In the Chinese classic, The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine, the Yellow Emperor asked his teacher and advisor, Ch’I Po, why people were not living as long as before. Ch’I Po replied, "Nowaways people use wine as a beverage and they adopt recklessness as usual behaviour…. They devote all their attention to the amusement of their minds, thus cutting themselves off from the joys of long life. Their rising and retiring is without regularity."
