1730s CE
Opium is produced locally for the first time in the U.K.

Dr. Charles Alston, a British botanist, is the first person to produce opium in the United Kingdom. He used the white poppy to achieve this because of its large pods. Alston also wrote several papers about the properties and medicinal benefits of opium during the 1730's.
