Greeks used cannabis recreationally at their symposia

Around the middle of fourth century BCE. the Greek comic poet, Ephippus, refers to the recreational use of cannabis. One of the fragments of his writing that survives (FR. 13) is a list of snacks consumed while drinking at a symposium (where males assembled to talk, conspire or celebrate). Among the snacks listed is a confection of cannabis seeds and honey.
