Distilled spirits are prescribed by doctors during the Black Death

During the Black Death, distilled spirits were prescribed by doctors. As a consequence, the consumption of spirits in Europe rose dramatically. Some people thought drinking more would protect them from disease. Others thought moderation in all things would save them.
