Carolus Linnaeus assigned the botanical name Theobroma cacao to the chocolate tree

In 1753, Swedish biologist Carolus Linnaeus developed a binomial system for classifying living organisms and named the chocolate tree "Theobroma cacao", or "food of the gods" in latin.
